When referencing Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) or the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) in media or educational materials, please use the following background information to support accuracy and consistency.
We recommend using “Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)” and “Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA)” on first reference, followed by “CMT” or “CMTA” in subsequent mentions. To help maintain consistency, we suggest avoiding phrases like “the CMTA” or “Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease.” The word “disease” should remain lowercase, even when “CMT” is capitalized, and “Charcot-Marie-Tooth” should always be hyphenated
About Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
Named after the three doctors who first described it in 1886: Charcot, Marie, and Tooth, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) affects one in every 2,500 people. This rare disease has multiple subtypes, each with a lower prevalence. People with CMT experience progressive sensory loss, muscle weakness, and atrophy in the arms and legs, along with impaired balance, mobility, hand function, and more. There is currently no treatment or cure for this debilitating disease.

About Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association

Logo Usage Guidelines
The CMTA logo may be used in public-facing materials, presentations, and co-branded efforts that support accurate communication about Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and CMTA’s work.
To help ensure clarity and brand consistency, we offer multiple versions of the CMTA primary logo. While we don’t prescribe specific use cases for each, here are a few general principles to guide your selection:
- Choose a version that ensures high contrast and clear legibility across print or digital backgrounds.
- Use the full-color or blue logos when working with light backgrounds or printed collateral.
- Use the white (negative) logo on dark backgrounds or video overlays where contrast is needed.
- Do not alter or distort the logo, including recoloring, cropping, or adding effects.
- For questions about logo use or to request custom formats, contact CMTA’s Head of Communications at kenny@cmtausa.org.
