The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA), the world’s largest philanthropic funder of research aimed at bringing treatments to patients and improving the lives of those living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), is proud to announce the designation of a new CMTA Center of Excellence at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Henrico, Virginia.

The center is led by Dr. Nicholas E. Johnson, MD, MSCI, FAAN, Director of the Center for Inherited Myology Research (CIMR), Professor, and Vice Chair of Research in Neurology at VCU. Dr. Johnson is a distinguished neuromuscular specialist with a robust background in inherited nerve and muscle disorders, including CMT. His extensive clinical and research expertise spans developing biomarkers, clinical outcomes, and genetic therapeutic trials in neuromuscular diseases.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Nicholas Johnson and his team to the CMTA Center of Excellence network,” said Laurel Richardson, CMTA’s Director of Community Outreach. “Their commitment to providing comprehensive, cutting-edge care and advancing research ensures that patients in Virginia and beyond have access to exceptional multidisciplinary services for CMT.”

The Muscular Dystrophy and CMT Clinic at VCU includes dedicated sites for both adults (Short Pump Pavilion) and children (Children’s Hospital of Richmond). These clinics offer a holistic approach to care, with services including neurology, physiatry, physical therapy, genetic counseling, orthopedic surgery, and support from social workers and other specialists. The team is dedicated to tailoring individualized care plans that meet the unique needs of patients and families living with CMT.

This new center adds to the CMTA’s expanding global network of over 60 Centers of Excellence, all committed to delivering the highest standard of care for individuals affected by CMT.
