The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA), the world’s largest philanthropic funder of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) research, is proud to announce the designation of Katie Brennan, MD, PhD, at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow, Scotland, as a CMTA Center of Excellence, CMTA’s first in Scotland.
Dr. Brennan, a consultant adult neurologist with expertise in nerve and muscle disorders, leads the neuropathy team at QEUH, serving the West of Scotland population. Her team includes Dr. Amy Davidson, Dr. Govind Chavada, and Dr. Carolynne Doherty.
Dr. Brennan completed her undergraduate training at the University of Glasgow and earned a PhD investigating biomarkers in neuropathy in 2011. She completed postdoctoral research with Michael Shy, MD, from 2013 to 2015 before assuming her current role in Glasgow. She also holds a National Health Service (NHS) Career Researcher Fellowship, enabling participation in CMT clinical trials.
Dr. Brennan’s CMT clinic sees patients all day every other Tuesday.
The CMTA Center of Excellence at QEUH offers comprehensive CMT care for both adults and children, including:
- Neurology
- Genetic counseling
- Physical therapy
- Referrals as needed for orthotics, surgical consultation, occupational therapy, and social work
With the addition of Dr. Brennan to the CMTA’s growing Centers of Excellence network, individuals in Scotland and surrounding regions now have greater access to specialized CMT care. This network connects patients with expert providers and supports improved quality of life.
