The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA), the world’s largest philanthropic funder of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) research, is proud to announce the designation of Joshua A. Smith, DO, as a CMTA Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Smith is a neuromuscular disease specialist dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and supporting individuals with CMT. He completed his medical training at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and pursued a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology, focusing on EMG and Neuromuscular Medicine. In addition to patient care, he is committed to educating future physicians.

The CMTA Center of Excellence at UPMC provides comprehensive CMT care for adults, including neurology services for diagnosis and management, orthotist support for mobility and greater independence, and ongoing care from a nurse practitioner. Genetic counseling is available through local referrals, though Dr. Smith currently orders most genetic testing. The clinic collaborates with local providers when specialized care is needed to meet patients’ needs.

With Dr. Smith joining the CMTA’s growing Centers of Excellence network, individuals in the Pittsburgh area now have greater access to specialized CMT care. This network connects patients with expert providers, improving their quality of life.
